Basukinath serves as a place of pilgrimage for Hindus.The Basukinath Temple is a popular attraction. Basukinath temple is the court of Baba Bhole Nath. In Basukinath Dham, Shiva and Parvati temple are just in-front of each other. In the evening when gates of both the temples are opened then the devotees are suggested to move away from in-front of the gates as there is a belief that Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati meet each other at this time. Basukinath is famous for the mela of Shraavana (a month of the Hindu calendar), between July and August. Many devotees visit the place from various parts of India and offer holy water of Ganges to the deity collected from Sultangunj, Bhagalpur district in Bihar, which is almost 135 km from Basukinath.

Stories Related to Basukinath

There is a belief related to Basukinath that during Sagar Manthan, Lord Shiva was pleased with the services of Nagraj Basuki and blessed him. It is said that this Shivlinga was established here by Nagraj Basuki. In ancient times, many cobras used to worship and perform milk bath to the Shivlinga during night time. When the people came to know about this then the Basukinath temple was built.

There is an another story related to Basukinath, a Sudra had a leprosy. He worshipped Shiva to cure his disease. Lord Shiva got pleased with his worship and came in his dreams and told him to invite the priest of Basukinath temple for a meal. This will cure your disease. The Sudra then took the message of Lord Shiva to the priest but he refused to come for the meal. Next day Lord Shiva told the priest that the Sudra is his devotee so accept his invitation and help him cure his disease.

The priest again refused which angered Lord Shiva and he cursed him of suffering from leprosy. This angered the priest and even he cursed him of facing thunderbolt. The curse of Lord Shiva caused him Leprosy and the priest’s curse caused Lord Shiva face thunderbolt which broke the Shivlinga. After this incident, the priest was very unhappy that due to his curse Lord Shiva had to bear pain. After this the priest accepted the invitation of the Sudra to have a meal in his house. The Queen of that place got the Shivlinga bound from silver.

Beliefs Related to Basukinath Dham

It is said that Basukinath temple is the court of Baba Bhole Nath. Bhole Nath listens to his devotees here so the devotees visiting Baidyanath Dham also visits Basukinath Dham. There is a belief that Bhole Nath does registration of Kanwariya in the Ajgaibinath temple situated in mid of the north flowing Ganga.

It is also said that this Ajgaibinath Mahadev provided bow to Janak which was broken by Lord Shri Ram and then married Sita. After offering Jal in Deoghar, the cases of the devotees ge transferred in the court of Baba Basukinath and when the devotees reach and offer Jal there then their cases are heard and solved.
