📍 Location
Baidyanath Dham is in Deoghar, in the state of Jharkhand, India. It is one of the most prominent pilgrimage destinations for Hindus and attracts millions of devotees every year.
🕉️ Religious Significance
Baidyanath Dham houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, which makes it one of the holiest Shiva shrines in India.
According to Hindu mythology, Ravana (the king of Lanka) performed severe penance to Lord Shiva and offered his ten heads. Lord Shiva, in the form of a healer (Vaidya), restored him, hence the name “Baidyanath” – meaning “Lord as the Divine Healer.”
Alongside the main Shiva temple, the complex houses several smaller temples dedicated to other deities.
Temple Complex
The Baidyanath Temple complex consists of 22 temples. The main shrine (Jyotirlinga) stands in the middle.
It is built in the traditional Nagara style of architecture, with a tall spire crowned by three gold tridents.
Devotees often carry water from the Ganga (especially from Sultanganj) and offer it at Baidyanath during the Shravani Mela.
Major Festivals & Events
Shravani Mela (July–August): The biggest festival here, when millions of Kanwariyas (devotees carrying holy water) throng the temple.
Maha Shivaratri: Special pujas and night-long prayers.
Other Hindu festivals like Makar Sankranti and Ram Navami are also celebrated with devotion.
Rituals & Worship
Pilgrims perform Abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the Jyotirlinga with water, milk, and other sacred items.
Carrying Ganga water (Kanwar Yatra) to offer to Lord Shiva at Baidyanath is considered highly meritorious.
There is also a tradition to visit Basukinath Temple, about 43 km away, after Baidyanath darshan to complete the pilgrimage.

Nearest Airport: Deoghar Airport (recently inaugurated), or Patna/Ranchi airports for more options.
